An international organization – World Sleep Society – aims at advancing sleep health worldwide. Their mission is to make people around the world aware of the importance of sleep. Since 2007 World Sleep Day is annually organised by the World Sleep Day Committee. It is an event created in order to celebrate the benefits of healthy sleep and to lessen the burden of sleep problems on society. It should be a celebration of sleep, but also a call to action.
Many people sleep less to work more, but do not understand that this is a vicious circle. Sleep disorders can be a serious problem affecting such areas of life as education, work, general health, or even driving. It is estimated that even as much as 45% of the world’s population deals with sleep problems, and it may cost countries such as United States even $400 billion every year. This is why World Sleep Day is a great occasion to understand the problem of sleep disorders and to prevent it. It is held annually on the Friday before Spring Vernal Equinox. The easiest way to celebrate the day is simply sleep. However, for people dealing with insomnia and other sleep problems this might be difficult. In this case, it is a good idea to talk to someone who can help, for example a sleep professional, or a doctor. Discussing the issue can be a good way to finding a solution. It is also a great occasion to review our night time routines and consider making some adjustments in order to keep a healthy rest at night.
Did you know?
A Swedish furniture store known worldwide decided to make World Sleep Day even more special in 2020. In some locations it will be possible to spend the Friday night before Spring Vernal Equinox in the store. The sleepover will run from 9 p.m. until 8 a.m. and include some food, entertainment, games, giveaways, prizes, and even a Silent Disco. Despite all of these activities, the brand assures: there will be enough time to sleep. Actually, this is the point of the whole event.
