February 21st is International Travel Guide Day, which was established during the 3rd Convention of the World Federation of Tourist Guide Associations (WFTGA), in Nicosia, Cyprus in 1989.
The idea of this holiday is to show the residents around the area for free. It is supposed to show the work of the guide to local communities, as well as to make the local authorities aware of the role of guides in serving tourists, and above all in creating the image of the city or region.
Attractive excursions for residents, prepared in many cities, do not always take place on February 21st. Very often they are organized the weekend before or after.
